It could be said that retail is in my DNA. My great grandfather was department store founder, George Court.I also started working in my father’s hardware shop while I was still in intermediate school – I loved serving customers.
The Warehouse was founded in 1982 and I stepped down as Managing Director in 2001,leaving plenty of talented people to run the business. I’m still a non-executive director, which means I still work with our executive directors to help oversee the direction of The Warehouse Group (TWG) as a whole.
When I’m not at TWG I work to find and create jobs for youth, and support community organisations and charities through the Tindall Foundation. I’m also involved in the work that K1W1 does – investing seed money and venture capital into start-ups.
One of the proudest moments of my career was being named Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year in 2015.
The changing face of retail
It’s obvious that there will be a continuing convergence of bricks-and-mortar and online retail. Technology is now a real focus,and The Warehouse Group is all set up to take that on and grow with it. We’ve moved into the online space, purchasing Torpedo7, Shop HQ, 1-Day, Red Alert and other online businesses.
We haven’t neglected the bricks and mortar either – Noel Leeming and R&R Sport are great additions to the Group. There’s no doubt we need new business models for the future – traditional bricks and mortar stores are shrinking, and will keep on doing so without the inclusion of new technology.
