I’m in charge of IT for Noel Leeming and Torpedo7. There are two parts to my IT role – the ‘run’ side that keeps it all going, and the ‘change’ side that develops new functionality. I make sure that IT services are always available, and I work on innovative software solutions as well.
As an ex-programmer, I love working with our in-house development team to build new applications. I’m proud to know that it’s our part of the business that keeps everything else up to date in a fast-paced digital world.
The changing face of retail
When I started at Noel Leeming 16 years ago, the IT team wasn’t very important. But because The Warehouse Group (TWG) is a forward-looking innovative company, that’s all changed. In fact, with the growth rate in online shopping and mobile devices, they couldn’t do without us.
The exciting part is that the retail industry is changing so fast – who knows what the future will look like? Technology is advancing all the time, with new functionality developing every day. Noel Leeming embraces change and will survive – and thrive.
Why join us?
Retail is a part of people’s lives and if we do it well, we can make those lives better. One of the highlights for me was getting through the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011. It’s where Noel Leeming’s IT team and equipment are located, and we worked really hard to keep services going in very trying circumstances.
To anyone interested in retail IT, my advice is to read a lot and be prepared to run towards change. It’s also a good idea to try and understand people and put yourself in their shoes. Knowing what the customer wants – everything follows from that.
And you can’t do better than a role with a major retailer like Noel Leeming. It’s got good people and a great culture, with in-house training and courses to help you build your career, along with all kinds of team benefits.
