Dean Kippenberger

    Merchandise Manager

I am responsible for the team that puts the stock into Torpedo7 (T7) stores. We deal with suppliers, logistics, stores customers, and internal teams like marketing, operations and IT. I love digging into the detail to find better or simpler ways to do things. The goal is to free up time from ‘doing the detail’ to allow more time thinking about the important stuff.
I’ve worked in retail for 20 years, starting with phone sales for PC Direct and arriving at Noel Leeming eight years later. I moved through various merchandise roles with The Warehouse Group (TWG) until now where I’m at T7 and loving it.
Every day brings new opportunities and challenges. During my time at Warehouse Stationery, I introduced Apple’s iPad, along with Telecom, Vodafone and Skinny Mobile to the business. At The Warehouse, I was able to initiate some bold programmes that improved performance in key areas.

    The changing face of retail

No day is ever the same in retail. There are ongoing challenges, excitement and change. There’s always a better product, method, display or way to engage your team and customers. The main challenge is how to stay relevant in a world where price is no longer meaningful, because everywhere indexes against everywhere else instantly.
T7 faces that challenge of a shrinking world and global marketplace, by investing in digital technology, giving customers shopping options and finding people who are smart, agile and willing to learn more. At the same time, it continues to support New Zealanders. It’s part of TWG, one of the biggest retailers in the country with one of the best people-focused cultures.

    Why join us?

Retail is a great field to launch a career in. So many top team members started as entry-level sales assistants or in admin roles. A huge array of courses are offered within TWG – negotiation, retail math, leadership coaching. And we get support for external courses as well, like Auckland University Short Courses. I’ve already benefitted from several industry-leading courses in my career.
In a culture that’s people-focused and dedicated, you can progress fast with the right attitude. Never accept the status quo, ask questions, use your initiative, and own your responsibilities. With so many retailers in the Group, you can look after your family needs just that little bit cheaper, and free up some hard-earned cash for having fun!
